Fixed vs. Expandable

Tooday we'll talk about a topic that has been very popular the last few years. Which is better, fixed blade broadheads or expandable? I'm not gonna get into which is better and why you should shoot which one but I will discuss the pros and cons of each and my personal preference when bowhunting. First I'll talk about fixed blade broadheads. Pros: fixed cutting diameter, always going to cut without worry, historically deeper penetration than expandable broadheads. Now some cons: not as accurate, same cutting diameter each time which is typically smaller than expandables. There are exceptions to these, but these are just general rules of thumb when shooting fixed bladed broadheads. Now I will talk about expandable broadheads. Pros: fly like a field point- more accurate, bigger cutting diameter. Cons: possibility of not opening (depending on type of expandable), no intstant cut like a fixed broadhead, typically not as much penetration due to larger cutting diameter. So there you have it, the basics of fixed and expandable broadheads. My personal preference is expandable broadheads. But that depends on what I'm hunting and the type of hunting I'm doing. For whitetail season here in Illinois I will use my Rage 2 blade chisel tip broadheads. I use these broadheads for the following reasons: chisel tips offer more penetration than regual rage broadheads, I'll get 2" wound channels, and with my setup with my bow I will almost always get a pass through so penetration isn't an issue. I'm not gonna tell ya that's the perfect setup for you and everyone else because frankly it's not. That's just the setup that works best for my bow and the hunting I'm doing. Everyone's setup will perform better with certain broadheads over others, it's up to you to figure out which is the best for you. If you truely want to get the best setup possible out of your bow and broadheads, you can't be brand loyal and you need to buy what broadheads will work best for you. Keep that in mind when purchasing your broadheads for next season. This is an important factor in taking your hunting to the Next Level.
